Pin Oak Stallion Broken Vow Pensioned

Edited Press Release

Broken Vow, sire of champion Champagne Room and five other Grade 1 winners, has been pensioned from stud duty, Pin Oak Stud announced on Oct. 21.

Bred and campaigned by Pin Oak, Broken Vow won nine of his 14 starts including victories in the 2001 Philip H. Iselin Handicap (G2) and Ben Ali Stakes (G3). Trained by Graham Motion, the son of Unbridled retired with earnings of $725,296 and entered stud at his birthplace.

The 24-year-old Broken Vow was consistently among the top 15 active sires, with 15 percent black type horses from starters. He has sired 91 stakes winners, including 32 graded stakes winners, from 17 crops of racing age with progeny earnings of $80,616,255.

In addition to siring 2016 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner and Eclipse champion Champagne Room, Broken Vow’s Grade 1-winning offspring include Sassy Image, Cotton Blossom, Unbridled Belle, and Rosalind. Additionally, Broken Vow is making his mark as a broodmare sire, as his daughters have already produced three champions and some 100 black type horses, including Eclipse champion Runhappy.

“First as a race horse and then as an anchor to our stallion roster for 20 seasons, Broken Vow is the embodiment of Ms. Abercrombie’s breeding program, producing sound, competitive racehorses whose bloodlines endure,” said Clifford Barry, manager of Pin Oak Stud. “We appreciate the industry’s support through the years, but mostly we thank Broken Vow for his loyal service to the farm and look forward to providing a well-deserved retirement for him here at Pin Oak.”
